Fall Semester 2007 Questions & Answers

9/10/2007: Turn up the heat!

Comment: Turn up the heat!

Answer: The temperature in the library is very cold because the heating hot water and steam are off in the building as a result of construction. The shutdown will be complete at the end of August. It had to be done now so that the heat worked in the Fall. While the hot water is off we will not have the ability to raise temperatures.

9/5/2007: Don't put L'Anee Philologique in the ARC

Comment: Please, please, please, do not put L'Annee Philologique in the ARC. I know that it's probably already been recatalogued. I've witnessed its removal from the Gen Ref area. But it is the best bibliography us Classicists have! The online version is terrible, impossible to use! I beg you, all of you, do not put it into the robotic pit. We need all of L'Annee, even back to 1930, to remain in the Gen Ref section where we can peruse ten volumes at a time, where no one will check it out.

Please.

Answer: We would like to reexamine the decision to put L'Annee in the ARC. The fact that it is available online was probably a major factor in the decision. I will make sure to test it. It may not be possible for us to decide right away because the move to the ARC is a major effort keeping our staff busy, and because the librarian responsible for Linguistics has taken a position elsewhere. But, please rest assured that we will consider your wishes.

8/23/2007: Get full access to Sarafi online books

Comment: Sign up for an account with Athens ( https://auth.athensams.net ) or somehow setup a way to have full access to the entire Oreilly Safari bookshelf. That would be really nice for online, up-to-date book access while VPN accessing the U.

Answer: You will be glad to hear that through our partnership with the Utah Academic Library Consortium, beginning Septermber 1, we will have access to the full Safari content. Check back in a week!

8/13/2007: Don't put dewey decimal books in ARC

Comment: I am concerned about the news of placing all dewey books and journals in the proposed automatic book retrieval machine. I graduated in Architecture in 2000 and great amount of my research at the library was done perusing the stacks of architecture books. Serendipendous finds of great books that influenced my research was tremendously valuable. The ability to peruse the shelves of dewey book and journals shelved in the automatic machine will be elliminated. Please do not put any architecture books or journals in the automatic retrieval machine.

Answer: Your suggestion has been sent to our Art and Architecture Librarian.

8/2/2007: Poor cell phone reception

Comment: Being a staff member and a student of the university, I really do enjoy spending time in our library. It has a very unique atmosphere that helps me to concentrate on my studying. However, there is one little things that bothers me. That thing is a very poor cell phone reception. I do realize that library management probably does not want to encourage patrons to use their phones in the library, but I also want management to realize that that cell phones became a important attribute of modern life. I think that would be a great idea to improve the cell phone reception within the library.

Thank you

Answer: Your suggestion has been forwarded to our Assistant Director for Public Service.

7/31/2007 Thanks for patent help

Comment: May I express my sincere gratitude for the assistance of the Marriot Library Patent Librarian, David Morrison. He showed excellent PR skills and superior knowledge of patent searching and such matters.

I believe he is a great asset to the library as well as the public.

7/17/2007: Book wasn't held for me

Comment: I received an email from the library that the book that I requested was there. I go to pick it up and someone had already checked it out. The book was supposed to be on hold in my name until the following day. So I would appreciate if you would tell your staff to not release books that are on hold for someone. I had made a special to the U to pick it up and the book wasn't there. I wasted my money making that trip for nothing.

Thanks a frustrated student.

7/10/2007: Unknown books checked out to me

Comment: I just spoke with a man on the circulation desk regarding items that are supposedly checked out to me. There are three books that I have no knowledge of nor did I check them out. In fact, I was not even in Utah on the date they were supposedly checked out to my account. I am very concerned about this issue and would appreciate it if someone would remove the books from my account and also explain how an individual could gain access to my account. Thank you.

Answer: Your comment has been sent to our Circulation Department supervisor.
