SUBSCRIPTIONS TO BE REVIEWED BEFORE RENEWING FOR 2005
The users of Marriott Library help determine what its collection will be. The library wants to be able to order materials they ask for. But the budget can not pay for all present subscriptions and also buy the new journals, books, and databases people would like.
These are the categories being reviewed before renewing for 2005.
- Journals [listed by title] | [listed by call number] Compared to the majority of the collection, the titles being reviewed show less evidence of use of either recent paper issues or downloads of recent articles. The lists also include titles which are duplicates or which changed markedly in cost or direction.
- Book series Some books come by subscription. They are either large sets which take years to complete or are an ongoing series of monographs issued under an umbrella title. All current standing orders are being reviewed.
- Exchanges. Libraries have long traded copies of local publications among themselves. Although free, these involve expenses of staff time and postage for items of sometimes parochial interest. Marriott will be reviewing these gifts this year.
- The library is also reviewing its purchases of reference books and expects to cut that budget.
Marriott must cut $300,000 to compensate for journal price increases - which averaged 8 % last year - and to provide money for some of the new subscriptions the campus needs. Not every title on these lists needs to be cut, although if most of them were renewed, the library would need to forego buying some books.
The library wants your help in identifying those subscriptions
which are the best ongoing assets to the collection.
