Marriott Library Collection Development
2001 Serials Cancellations and Reinvestments

ADDENDA JUNE 2001 - All state agencies have recently been required to plan for a hold back of 4% of their annual budget to prepare for a possible revenue shortfall. Since we had already planned for a serials review we will be using the lists below. The review list of periodicals now has additional titles costing over $150 per use.

Marriott Library continues to keep a close watch on current subscriptions and prune those which appear to be poor value for money. This vigilance has made it possible for us for the first time in years to add new journals and indexes . Indeed, we were able to start almost every journal requested. Controlling our serials costs means we, unlike many research libraries, aren't forced to cut our the book budget.
We plan to look at the following types of material this year. Our cancellations must be final by Labor Day. Give your comments to the librarian who is the selector for your academic department or to the Serials Collection Working Group . Are there similar titles which should be cancelled? We appreciate your understanding that some purchases are not sustainable. Thanks to those of you helping redirect scholarly publishing by your own choices in how and where you publish, edit, and review. http://www.createchange.org/.

High cost journals
For six years we have been counting each time recent issues of a journal are reshelved . Many of the high cost-per-use titles have already been cancelled. However, this year others have increased amazingly in per-use cost. Some of them are available electronically and, since not all publishers give us statistics of online use, we do not know their true cost. The cost per use of others has gone up even though we have no electronic access; it may be cheaper to have individual articles from these journals faxed to readers by document suppliers. See the review list and current costs.

Looseleaf services
Reference works issued in paper sheets which are interfiled into large sets.
Most of these are business or physical property information and much is now online. Examples: Moody's, Standard and Poor's, Standard Federal Tax Reports.

Other paper reference sources
We have eliminated most, but not all, of the duplication of paper indexes with online indexes. We will look at the few remaining duplicates and, since we find very few people willing to use paper indexes anymore, all paper indexes will be occasionally re-examined. Examples: MLA Bibliography, Readers Guide, Child Development Abstracts.

Duplicates with Quinney Law Library
We have eliminated many of the duplicates between Marriott and Eccles. There are fewer duplicates with Quinney, but we will make sure they are necessary. These titles are held at Law in paper and would be available electronically at Marriott.

Paper editions of journals with reliable electronic access
We have been cautious about cancelling paper editions until we are satisfied that there is a stable archive. Such repositories now exist. Examples: Annual Reports / in Highwire.-- American Mathematical Society, Science microfilm / in JSTOR.

Online indexes
A library goal for this year is to collate use statistics for electronic resources. We do not expect to have this elusive data from all publishers by summer but will begin to look at it later in the fall.

Annuals
We will gradually look at publications which come regularly but at longer intervals than conventional journals.
