The University of Utah, Utah State University, Brigham Young University, University of Nevada at Reno and University of Nevada - Las Vegas have begun a pilot project to see if it is possible to regionally coordinate serials holdings. Many journals are expensive and we want to see if we can reduce duplication of the same titles within the region. The success of Utah Article Delivery--a service where articles from area libraries are faxed directly to patrons of sister libraries--encourages us that we can share some titles.
A committee of Marriott librarians has identified titles whose current issues were reshelved fewer than 35 times during the last five years and which are held by at least one other nearby library. We propose to cancel these for 2001 and see whether relying on our partners is more economic. We also continue to limit the amount of duplication of material in hard and electronic formats; there is decreasing interest in using paper indexes or microfilm. Marriott, Eccles Health Sciences and Quinney Law Libraries work together to rationalize holdings.
As we note titles which seem poor value for money we will cancel them to have the money to reinvest in new products which we believe will be more useful.
