Journal Cancellations for Calendar Year 2000

Marriott Library continued to control the amount it spends for journals and other serial publications in 1999. Sarah Michalak, the library director, wrote all faculty in April 1999 telling them we would look at expensive science journals and at indexes and other bibliographic tools published in paper. The lists of titles under consideration were posted on the Marriott website.

The science librarians, with faculty input, canceled titles worth about $100,000. We continued to rely heavily on our cost per use studies, which are based on the subscription cost divided by the number of times current issues are re-shelved. Some academic departments also suggested substitutions for titles on the basic list.

Some librarians in other fields, working with faculty, systematically went through their departmental journal lists, canceled some titles, and substituted others to better reflect current campus research interests.

A taskforce, made up of reference librarians from around Marriott, looked at all paper indexes. These had cost about $100,000 yearly, we canceled titles worth $63,000. www.lib.utah.edu/overlap2.html . The total: 201 titles, worth $166.983.89, were not renewed for the year 2000.
