These were the paper indexes known to have been taken by Marriott Library in 1999.  Each was examined to determine if it still met the needs of our present and future patrons.  These titles cost about $100,000 a year; we will not renewing about $63,000 worth for 2000.

Titles that were kept are generally those for which we have no adequate electronic equivalent. We think most patrons much prefer electronic indexes and that the interest and skill in using paper indexes will decrease even more in the future. Selectors, users, and librarians must continue to judge whether each discipline is best served by spending money on paper indexes or by reinvesting in new databases or journals. We have designated some indexes as being " on probation" because the library already has both the print and electronic versions. In some cases the present subscription package requires we take both. In other cases, librarians report some users are unwilling to use the electronic versions or that the electronic versions are unreliable.

We feel these conditions are likely to change and urge that the probation list be re-examined yearly.
