Areas of study in Philosophy range from the history of philosophy to schools of philosophy to study of individual philosophers and philosophical issues. The Marriott Library has rich resources in all these areas. The book and journal collection is large, and there is also a wealth of information in electronic formats. This is a guide to the basic material to do research in Philosophy. It is intended as a starting place and is thus not a comprehensive list of tools but a selective and general guide. Philosopher's Index 1940-Present
The most important source for locating periodical articles and books on particular subjects in philosophy. It provides indexing and abstracting for books, dissertations, and journal articles, covering material in English, French, German, Italian, and Spanish as well as selective coverage in other languages. It provides indexing and abstracts from books and journals in philosophy and related fields. A major source of information in the areas of aesthetics, epistemology, ethics, logic, and metaphysics, as well as material on the philosophy of various disciplines.The print version ( Gen Ref, Humanities Indx Shelf, Lev 3 Z7127 .P48) includes book reviews, while the online version does not.

Humanities Index
This source indexes scholarly journals in the humanities, including philosophy, since 1984. It also includes book reviews. For research prior to 1984, see the printed version ( Marriott Library Gen Ref, Humanities Indx Shelf, Lev 3 AI3 .S63).

The following are three text databases which include the searchable full-text works of various philosophers.

British Philosophy 1600-1900
The British Philosophy database contains the complete texts of the following databases: Hobbes: English Works, Locke-Berkeley-Hume, Economics: Smith to Mill and The Utilitarians. Also included is Francis Bacon's Novum Organum (in English and Latin), the Selby-Bigge two-volume edition of The British Moralists (with excerpts from Butler, S. Clarke, J. Clarke, Wollaston, Cudworth, Hutcheson, Balguy, Kames, Paley, Shaftsbury, Smith, Mandeville and Brown). Anne Conway's The Principles of the Most Ancient and Modern Philosophy (in English and Latin), Burkes Reflections of the Revolution in France and Sidgwick's Outline of the History of Ethics.

Continental Rationalists

Use these catalogs to:

  • Find books, government documents, audio-visual materials, manuscripts, maps, software and electronic media.
  • Find the names of periodicals libraries subscribe to, but not individual articles within each magazine or journal.
  • Search by author, title, subject, keywords, date, call number, or ISBN/ISSN.

UNIS (help)
Lists items owned by UofU Marriott, Math, and Quinney Law Libraries and periodicals they subscribe to. Tells where book is shelved and whether it is checked out. Search the Eccles Health Science Library catalog for medicine, nursing, pharmacy materials.

Worldcat (help)
A combined catalog of over 14,000 libraries from around the world. WorldCat lists over 40,000,000 items. You can place an interlibrary loan request for items found in other libraries while online. The book will be sent here.

Philosophy books are generally classified in the B section: B Philosophy (General), BC Logic, BD Speculative Philosophy, BH Aesthetics, BJ Ethics. Philosophy of Science books may also be found in the Science section. Analogously for other "philosophy of ...." books

Routledge Encyclopedia of Philosophy
This is the first new encyclopedia in the field in thirty years. It features the latest research by experts in the fields on the tradional themes and new developments. The major coverage is in the Anglo-American tradition although there is extensive coverage of the philosophy of other cultures. Signed articles include bibliographies. Ten volumes. Encyclopedia of Philosophy
This encyclopedia dates from 1967 and contains articles by distinguished scholars on important philosophical concepts and theories, and philosophers. Its scope is international and historical, including ancient, medieval, and modern philosophy, Eastern philosophy, as well as fields which have influenced and inspired philosophical discourse. The signed articles contain bibliographies. Eight volumes. Location: Marriott Library General Reference, Level 3, B41 .E5

Encyclopedia of Philosophy Supplement
This is a supplement to the previously mentioned Encyclopedia of Philosophy intended to update thirty years of developments in philosophy since 1967. It contains a summary of developments in the major fields of philosophy, as well as newer fields such as feminist philosophy and bioethics. There is a useful table of contents on page xxix. Blackwell Philosopher Dictionaries
This series in dictionary format contains words central to the works of individual philosophers. Current holdings include dictionaries for Descartes, Hegel, Hobbes, Locke, Rousseau, and Wittgenstein. For call numbers check UNIS under title "Blackwell Philosopher Dictionaries".

Oxford Companion to Philosophy and Cambridge Dictionary of Philosophy
Many eminent philosophers have contributed to these dictionaries. While the coverage emphasizes contemporary Anglo-American philosophy, most major philosophical schools and philosophers are included. They provide substantive definitions of philosophical terms, as well as entries on non-living philosophers. No bibliographic information is provided. Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy
This is an online, full-text encyclopedia developed by Stanford University. Well-known contributors have been asked to submit articles in their areas of expertise. The database is searchable by keyword and one can browse through an alphabetical list of subjects covered. All articles contain bibliographies and their are links in the articles and bibliographies. Though this endeavor holds great promise in that the contributors will be able to update their articles and bibliographies with the new developments in their fields, it remains very incomplete.

Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy
This encyclopedia includes many topics not yet covered by the Stanford site, and though the entries are more elemental than the Stanford site, they are suitable for undergraduates and laypeople.

Hippias:Limited Area Search of Philosophy on the Internet
This is an online search across eight metasites, and is maintained by professional philosophers. Browsing is not available but if you want to perform a search, this is the place to start.

MIT Encyclopedia of the Cognitive Science
This searchable interdisciplinary database provides articles by leading researchers in the field of Cognitve Science. Articles in the "Philosophy" area cover classical topics to the latest research. Good Bibliographies.

Guide to Philosophy on the Internet
This site is a comprehensive, browsable guide to philosophy material on the Internet. The table of contents contain 16 categories which lead to lists of links on almost every philosophical topic.

This site includes thousands of sorted links to philosophy on the internet.

Voice of the Shuttle- Philosophy Page
Basically a very large list of Philosophy topic links.

There are many sites devoted to individual philosophers. As an example, Kant on the Web is a list of links to resources about Kant, including biographies, teaching/lecture notes, online reference, and texts. Read Norman Kemp Smith's 1929 version of the _Critique of Pure Reason_ online!
