FINDING JOURNAL ARTICLES return to top

Print resource Bibliographie der deutschen Sprach- und Literaturwissenschaft - Z2231.B52 General Reference Index Shelves - Similar to Germanistik, but issued annually. Sometimes referred to Eppelsheimer and/or Köttelwesch by scholars.

Print resource Germanistik - Z2235.A2 G4 General Reference Index Shelves - Issued quarterly, Germanistik is useful for locating articles from German and continental European journals not covered by the MLA. An annual index appears in issue four.

Print resource Internationale Bibliographie der Zeitschriftenliteratur - AI9 .I4 Stacks, Level One. - The IBZ is one of the few foreign periodical indexes that extend coverage back into the 19th century. The main part of the IBZ begins in 1896 and runs to the present day (although our subscription ceased in 1996 due to lack of funds); in addition, there are twenty Ergänzungsbände that extend coverage back to 1860.

Electronic resource Linguistics and Language Behavior Abstracts (LLBA) - This is the place to go for German language and linguistics research articles. This resource is available to University of Utah users only.

Electronic resource MLA Bibliography - The MLA is the largest database for journal articles on literary topics. Entries date from 1963-present. Citations only; no fulltext available. Help Guide This resource is available to University of Utah users only.

Electronic resource Periodical Contents Index (PCI) - PCI is an unusual, yet very useful, index for locating journal articles on literary topics. While the MLA covers 1963-present, PCI works backward from 1990 to the first issue of the journal. This makes it invaluable for locating articles before 1963 (and all the way back to 1770, in some cases). Citations only; no fulltext available. This resource is available to University of Utah users only.

Project Muse - Full text of over 40 scholarly journals from the Johns Hopkins University Press.

Academic Search Elite - This core periodical index for scholarly information provides coverage of 1,700+ peer-reviewed journals, full text for over 1,250 journals with many dating back to 1990, and over 1,000 journals with images.

LIBRARY CATALOGS return to top
UNIS is the library catalog for all materials in the Marriott, Quinney Law, and Math Libraries. Help Guide for searching for German titles in UNIS.

WorldCat Help Guide A combined catalog of over 14,000 libraries from around the world. WorldCat lists over 40,000,000 items. You can place an interlibrary loan request for items found in other libraries while online. The book will be sent here. This resource is available to University of Utah users only.

Karlsruher Virtueller Katalog (KVK) allows you to search most major German (and other European) library catalogs with a single search. The KVK, while powerful, is a bit quirky, so feel free to contact the subject selector for assistance.

BIBLIOGRAPHIES, LEXICA, ENCYCLOPEDIAS, usw. return to top

Print resource Brockhaus Enzyklopädie - AE27 .G672 General Reference Collection - Standard German encyclopedia.

Print resource Deutsches Literatur-Lexikon - Z2230 .K863 General Reference Collection - This is an exhaustively detailed lexikon of German writers with one major drawback. The current edition began to appear in 1968 and the editors still haven't finished it. They are proceeding alphabetically, so if the author you seek comes after Sternaux (last entry in vol. 19), you're out of luck for now. For Sternaux-Z, try the Literaturlexikon listed below.

Print resource Gesamtverzeichnis des deutschsprachigen Schrifttums 1700-1910 - Z2221.G469 General Reference Collection; and Gesamtverzeichnis des deutschsprachigen Schrifttums 1911-1965 Z2221 G47 General Reference Collection - These two titles are a bibliography of virtually all known publications in the German language for the given time periods. This is the place to go to find out information about the history of a text.

Print resource Kritisches Lexikon zur deutschsprachigen Gegenwartsliteratur (KLG) - PT401Z .K75 General Refence Collection - The KLG is a lexikon of contemporary German writers. It is arranged by writer and for each there is an introductory biographical section, a critical essay, and a bibliography of both the author's works as well as significant secondary texts. There are two versions of the KLG, a print version in General Reference (recommended for reading), and a CD version (fulltext search capability). This resource is available to University of Utah users only.

Electronic resource Literaturlexikon - PT41 .L58 1998 Multimedia Center - Commonly referred to as Killy for its editor. The CD version allows one to search the full text of the lexikon, a major advantage over the print version.

Print resource Meyers enzyklopädisches Lexikon - AE27 .M6 1971 General Reference Collection - Standard German encyclopedia.

ELECTRONIC TEXT COLLECTIONS return to top

Electronic resource Projekt Gutenberg - This website houses electronic texts from many German authors. For copyright reasons, the authors included are, to put it bluntly, very dead. The previous sponsor, AOL, dropped the project in March 2002 and it was picked up by Der Spiegel. They've at least given it a home, but the search feature is no longer available as of April 2002.

Electronic resource Die Digitale Bibliothek - Literature on CDs. To read the texts, you have to install a small program on your computer that comes on the disc. There are many titles available, ranging from Goethes Werke to Kurt Tucholskys Werke. Go here to see a complete list of titles.

Electronic resource Goethes Faust im Internet - This is a video version of a staging of Goethes Faust. Browse by act and scene and then click the link to see the production via Real Video. This requires a fast connection, i.e.- don't try this over a standard modem.

Electronic resource German Literature on the Internet - This page lists free websites that offer German texts ranging from Goethe to Volkslieder. This is a somewhat random way to find a specific text, but it can be fun to browse.

Electronic resource Literary Encyclopedia - The Literary Encyclopedia is an authoritative, up-to-date reference work written by named scholars most of whom are current university teachers. Its entries represent the state of the art in scholarly understanding. Includes information on German authors and German literature

WEB LINKS return to top
German search engines and web indexes:
Yahoo! Deutschland - Just like its American counterpart, other than the language.
Fireball - My personal favorite, if only for the rather bizarre feature "Live-Suche."
AllesKlar - More German-focused than either Yahoo! Deutschland or Fireball, i.e.- fewer non-German language sites come up in a search.
Paperball - Paperball searches the most recent edition of many German-language newspapers.
Paperazzi - Similar to Paperball, but Paperazzi also searches about the last 30 days of newspapers.

Buying German books online:
IBIS - International Book Import Service is a U.S-based importer for German books. They can get virtually anything in print (find titles using buch + medien online), are very friendly, and have very reasonable shipping rates.
buch + medien online - Sponsored by the German book publishing industry, this site is a web version of the Verzeichnis Lieferbarer Bücher (German Books in Print). You can't actually order books here, but it is the best place to see what is in print.
Amazon.de - This is the German version of Amazon.com and works just like it. Great for searching for books since it shows you the cover, but--yikes!--the shipping to North America will probably cost more than the book.
ZVAB - The Zentrales Verzeichnis Antiquarischer Bücher brings together hundreds of used book dealers on one site. This is a great site for buying out-of-print or rare German books, with shipping rates varying depending on the bookseller.

German Studies sites:
German Studies Web - This site is maintained by librarians who specialize in German. Great place to tap into their collective knowledge of online resources for German.
Server Frühe Neuzeit - If your period is early modern, then this is the site for you. Navigation is a bit tricky, but the wealth of information--particularly the scanned images from period texts--make the effort worthwhile. Frühe Neuzeit Digital is another source for early modern scholars.
Autoren - This page has numerous links to sites for individual German writers. Autorenlinks, one of the options, is particularly recommended.
Adelung Wörterbuch - The Bavarian State Library has made this seminal dictionary available online in both transcribed and scanned versions. Fairly user-friendly.

German-language media:
German Radio Stations Online Live - Links to approximately 120 German, Swiss, and Austrian radio stations that broadcast via the Web.
