MAJOR INDEX
Georef
1693- present
An exhaustive index of journal articles, conference papers, maps, books,
and federal and state government publications in the geosciences. Covers
North America from 1785 and the rest of world since 1933. Recent citations
include abstracts; records for earlier citations contain a generous number
of descriptors. No full-text. UU owns some of the material listed--use
the "locate document" link next to citations you like to have
a search for the journal be run automatically in UNIS for our call number
or, if we subscribe electronically, a link to the journal's fulltext.
You can have Georef email you any records it has added in the last fortnight
which have keywords or personal or insitutional names of interest to you;
use the "save history/alerts" button.
SPECIALIZED INDEXES
Web of Knowledge/Web of Science
Coverage: 1997 - present (articles may be earlier if they were CITED in articles published from 1997 on). Maximum users: unlimited campus
Consolidated searching of Science Citation Index, Social Science Citation Index, and Arts & Humanities Citation Index, multidisciplinary databases listing articles in 8500 major scholarly journals. To search science only, select the Web of Science database. This database is especially useful for finding articles which have cited a known article or given author in their bibliography. Search by topic, author, journal title, author's institution, cited author, cited work, cited year. Please logout when finished. A help link is available at the top of the database web page. Print versions of this index have the title Science Citation Index and cover earlier material than that of the available online version (1955- 2002) and are located in Science Reference on Level 1 at Q1.A1Z S365
Digital
Dissertations
1861 - present
Index to doctoral dissertations (and a few masters theses), primarily
from the U.S. and Canada. The fulltext may be available for post-1997
works, especially if the author was at a university in Utah or was writing
about Utah. In these cases you can request that you be emailed an access
number for a download of the entire text.
Geobase
1980 - present
Although aimed primarily at geographers, Geobase indexes major geology
journals and can be used as a backup to Georef. Good for geomorphology
and natural hazard articles. Abstracts, no full-text. UU owns some of
the 2000 journals indexed.

Glossary of Geology. QE 5 B38 1997 Science Reference Desk,
Level 4. Other specialized dictionaries, encyclopedias and handbooks
for the geosciences can be found in the QE section of the Science Reference
area, Level 4.
Columbia Earthscape http://www.earthscape.org/
Fully searchable web resources - including scholarly journals, conferences,
books and datasets- of interest to earth scientists and students. Most
useful for interdisciplinary or public policy issues like climatic change.
Includes full-text of books from the National Research Council and university
presses.
MAP COLLECTION
The library has over 200,000 map sheets. We receive virtually all topographic
and geologic maps published by the US Geological Survey. We also have
geologic maps from many state geological surveys and coverage, at the
scale of at least 1:1,000,000, of most other countries. We try to have
1:250,000 topographic coverage of most land areas.
Maps are listed in UNIS. To find geologic maps do a subject search under
Geology-area-subarea-maps
e.g. Geology-Utah-Wasatch
Mountains-Maps
General and topographic maps are usually issued as large sets and are
listed under the name of the whole area covered.
Great Salt Lake, Utah--Maps
Keyword searching can be very effective for focused searches.
wasatch and fault
and maps
Georef includes maps; a useful technique is to search Georef for specific
citations and then search UNIS for the call number.
Map publishing is complicated; we may have coverage of an area as part
of a much larger set. Don't hesitate to ask the map or science librarians
(581-7533) for help.
Most maps can be checked out.
