FIND JOURNAL ARTICLES and FIND BOOKS

Database Selection Note: The best overall index for Electrical Engineering literature is "INSPEC". It is the best source for physics, computer engineering, electrical engineering, electronics and computer control literature. This index is found at the "Axiom" web site;  the names are frequently used interchangebly, with INSPEC being the scholarly literature subset of the Axiom web site. "Compendex" is a very good second choice for many electrical engineering topics. "NTIS" is the source for reports on government funded research (of which there is a great deal in many diverse areas). "Applied Science & Technology Abstracts" give access to many trade publications and to several top journals that have a distinctly "applied-engineering" focus. The "Science Citation Index" covers the top 25-30% of journals in Electrical Engineering journals and also provides the ability to search the scholarly literature based on citation-sharing to locate topically related articles. IEL provides online access to IEEE journals and conference literature but this is only a small portion of the coverage of the INSPEC database, when you need the full text of an IEEE publication from 1988 to the present use IEL . MathSciNet provides access to the scholarly literature of Mathematics and can often help with finding solutions to applied engineering mathematics problems.

Remote Access to Library Databases: Nearly every database offered by the library come with license restrictions from the database producer. Normally, the library is allowed to offer database access to selected library computers only (restrictive license) OR to all computers across campus (usual license). If you are a student, faculty or employee of the Univesity of Utah, you may register for remote database access, allowing you the ability to search from home or other off-campus locations -- try the "Transparent Proxy" link on the right side of this web page for a quick and easy connection to most databases.

Property Data: EngNetBase (CRC Handbooks Online) - This resource is available to University of Utah users only.
Search 80+ CRC Handbooks from primarily Engineering disciplines. In addition to vast amounts of property data, many of these handbooks have descriptive chapters that provide an overview of certain engineering and science topics. (Note: At this time there is vastly more property information available in print resources than is electronically available. Check with a librarian for help in finding property information).

Selected reference works located in the Science Reference Collection, Level 4.
Besides scholarly literature, much information useful to engineers is in books, handbooks, & encyclopedias. A few of these very useful resources are listed below. This is *not* a complete list. The large majority of property data published over the last century is *not* available on the Internet, but is found in printed handbooks, looseleaf collections, and journals. Locating data takes perseverance and not every material or compound has published values for all possible properties. Reference books are not usually allowed to leave the library. However, many reference books that are available for checkout, may be found in the main engineering collection (see the map above). Consult a Science & Engineering librarian for assistance in locating property information. Nearly all of the selected reference works below have been published in the last 10-15 years.
An asterick (*) denotes a handbook searchable in the online database "EngNetBase".

RESEARCH TIPS return to top

Tips

If you are a student, faculty or employee of the Univesity of Utah, you may register for remote database access, allowing you the ability to search from home or other off-campus locations.

The large majority of Property Data published over the last century is not in electronic format, or on the Internet, but is found in printed handbooks, looseleaf collections, and journals in the Science & Engineering Library located on 4th floor of Marriott Library. Locating data takes perserverence and not every material or compound has published values for all possible properties. Consult a Science & Engineering librarian for assistance in locating property information. The NIST web site is an excellent free source for a broad range of property information.

Engineering Handbooks on a great many subjects are available in print in the Science & Engineering Reference Collection on Level 4 of Marriott Library (see map). This is an area rich in engineering data and short turorials. Much more data is availble here than on any web site. Reference books do not circulate but many handbooks, as well as introductory to advanced books on nearly all engineering topics are available for check-out from the general collection.

The Call Number arrangement of library materials is a subject arrangement.
Use call number areas to browse for books on specific engineering topics.
Be aware that information on some subjects, especially those that have applications in other engineering areas, may be divided among more than one range of call numbers.

For online Patent Information visit the USPTO (US Patent & Trademark Office) or the EPO (European Patent Office) sites; listed above under the Web LInks "Reference Sources" section.
