FIND JOURNAL ARTICLES | FIND BOOKS | ADDITIONAL LIBRARY RESOURCES | WEB LINKS | RESEARCH TIPS Civil and environmental engineering can be divided into the focus areas of structural, geotechnical, transportation, water resources, environmental and project management. Engineers in this profession are responsible for the the planning, design, construction, and operation of facilities such as buildings, bridges, water systems, transit systems, etc. The management of the environment as it relates to these facilities is also addressed. A knowledge of the basic subject areas of mathematics, chemistry, physics, biology, and computer science are necessary to solve the problems in civil and environmental engineering.Daureen Nesdill (library subject specialist) | U of U Civil and Environmental Enginnering | Wayne Cottrell (Department Representative) |

Tips Database Selection Note: The best overall index for Civil and Environmental Engineering literature is "Compendex". This index is found on the Articles Databases & More page under either "Compendex" or "Ei Village/Engineering Village 2". The two names are used interchangebly since Compendex is the database and Ei Village is the interface used to access the database. "NTIS" is the source for reports on government funded research (of which there is a great deal in many diverse areas). The "Web of Knowledge - Science Citation Index" covers the top 25-30% of journals in Civil and Environmental Engineering journals and also provides the ability to search the scholarly literature based on citation-sharing to locate topically related articles. Remote Access to Library Databases: Nearly every database offered by the library come with license restrictions from the database producer. Normally, the library is allowed to offer database access to selected library computers only (restrictive license) OR to all computers across campus (usual license). If you are a student, faculty or employee of the Univesity of Utah, you may register for remote database access, allowing you the ability to search from home or other off-campus locations. The large majority of Property Data published over the last century is not in electronic format, or on the Internet, but is found in printed handbooks, looseleaf collections, and journals in the Science & Engineering Library located on 4th floor of Marriott Library. Locating data takes perserverence and not every material or compound has published values for all possible properties. Consult a Science & Engineering librarian for assistance in locating property information. The NIST web site is an excellent free source for a broad range of property information. Engineering Handbooks on a great many subjects are available in print in the Science & Engineering Reference Collection on Level 4 of Marriott Library (see map). This is an area rich in engineering data and short turorials. Much more data is availble here than on any web site. Reference books do not circulate but many handbooks, as well as introductory to advanced books on nearly all engineering topics are available for check-out from the general collection. Also see the Science and Engineering electronic reference page on the Science and Engineering website. The
Call Number arrangement of library materials is a subject
arrangement. For online Patent Information visit the USPTO (US Patent & Trademark Office) or the EPO (European Patent Office) sites; listed above under the Web LInks "Reference Sources" section. Want additional information, then visit the Government Documents Department and ask for the Patent Librarian.
